Tree roots support stability and move water and nutrients through the tree. Much of the root system is hidden, so visible changes around the trunk and soil should be treated as clues—not a diagnosis.
The Root Zone Extends Beyond the Trunk
Important roots can occupy a broad, shallow area that does not end at the canopy edge. Construction, trenching, parking, and grade changes near a tree can therefore matter even when work does not touch the trunk.
Changes Worth Noticing
- A new lean accompanied by lifted or cracked soil
- Recent trenching, excavation, or severed roots
- Heavy vehicle traffic or stored materials over the root area
- Added soil or a changed grade near the trunk
- Cavities, damage, or fungal growth near the base
- Canopy decline occurring after site disturbance
Protect Roots During Property Work
Before construction or landscaping, identify trees to retain and discuss equipment routes, excavation, material storage, and grade changes. Planning before roots are cut is more useful than trying to interpret decline afterward.
When to Request an Inspection
Request an arborist inspection when root-area changes occur with a new lean, canopy change, storm damage, or concern about what the tree could reach. An on-site assessment can consider the whole tree and surrounding property; no single sign confirms root failure.
